Our History

The roots of the Nyenrode Business Universiteit date back to 1946. Captains of industry from leading Dutch corporations as KLM, Shell, Unilever, Philips and Akzo, supported by the late queen's consort Prince Bernhard, took the initiative of starting an educational institute called ‘het Nederlands OpleidingsInstituut voor het Buitenland’ (NOIB). Goal of the founders was to create new business leaders who were action inclined and internationally oriented. The for business, by business ethos guaranteed that practical relevance would flow through the veins of the institute.
In 1982, Nyenrode  officially received the university status from the Dutch government. Nyenrode - The Netherlands Business School, as it was called then, changed its name to Nyenrode Business Universiteit in 2005.
Over the years Nyenrode’s educational scope has been broadened. For instance, in 1982, the International MBA was founded. The program appeals to an international community of students, attracting candidates from over 20 countries each year and making the Nyenrode network more multicultural than ever before. Beside this program, an Executive MBA is offered on part-time basis. Nyenrode now also offers executive modular MBAs on Business & IT, Food & Finance, and Public & Private.
Accountancy & Controlling
A milestone in Nyenrode’s history was the integration of the School of Accountancy & Controlling into Nyenrode Business Universiteit, The Business School of Nyenrode formerly was  a joint venture with educational partner NIVRA.  Nyenrode provides short courses (Permanent Education) to update the necessary knowledge for controllers, accountants and other financial experts.
MSc in Management program
Nyenrode’s  five decades lasting expertise with the BBA curriculum formed the basis of our sixteen-month Master of Science in Management program. Suitable for those who already had a bachelor degree. This program is now also offered on a part-time basis.
BBA new Business & BA and BSc in Business Administration
As of 2011, Nyenrode is the owner of Nyenrode New Business School. With this acquisition, since 1992 it could add the Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) again to its portfolio.
As of 2016, Nyenrode started the three years on campus BSc in Business Administration. In 2017 it was awarded a 4,7 out of 5 in terms of student satisfaction, making it the highest ranked Academic Bachelor program in Business & Economics in the Netherlands in 2017 (Nationale Studenten Enquête - Studiekeuze 123).

Executive education
An important pillar of the university is the field of executive education. Nyenrode among others develops tailor-made programs for a wide range of clients. These in-company programs address specific organizational, entrepreneurial and managerial challenges in the clients' markets. Furthermore, Nyenrode offers several key non-degree management programs for specific moments in a person’s career: from young (soon-to-be) managers to board members and non-executives. On occasion, special programs and master classes are built around themes that are highly relevant for today’s business world.
Roots in the local community
Nyenrode has strong structural ties with the local community, the town of Breukelen. Nyenrode is the largest employer in the area. It’s castle is one of the few in the Netherlands being used as a meeting place and not as a museum. Beside being an educational and research institute, Nyenrode also facilitates events such as business meetings, concerts and weddings.
