The FD Career Challenge 2010 Starts Search for New Leaders
For the third year running, Het Financieele Dagblad, Nyenrode and LinkedIn are organizing the FD Career Challenge, a competition in which ambitious professionals battle for 50 Mini MBA places and the top prize: an Executive MBA worth €49,500 at Nyenrode. This year's event will challenge participants to formulate and develop their personal leadership. The registration deadline is 10 February. For more information, visit the website (in Dutch).

MBA Charity Seminar: Creating Social Responsible Opportunities
The MBA Charity seminar ‘Creating Social Responsible Opportunities’ will be held on 23 February. Speakers will include new venture capitalist Henk Keilman, Prof. Dr. Paul de Blot (professor of business spirituality at Nyenrode), Rik van Terwisga from Vitens, and Frank Martel from VX Company IT Services. 14th Family Business Day
The 14th Family Business Day was held at Nyenrode on Friday 29 January. Themed ‘The success of the family business’, the day included a speech by Joop Wijn, candidate for membership of ABN AMRO’s Executive Board. The meeting also heard from the director of one of the oldest family businesses in the Netherlands, Pieter Knaapen of KnaapenGroep, founded in 1652. Organized by Nyenrode in partnership with Berk Accountants en Belastingadviseurs and ABN AMRO, the Family Business Day saw the presentation of the first copy of ‘De stille kracht van het familiebedrijf’ (The Quiet Strength of the Family Business), a new book by Prof. Roberto Flören and Stefan Jansen RA. ‘Expat of the Year’ Election About to Start
Starting on 8 February, you can cast your vote to decide who will be the Expat of the Year 2010. To participate, visit: www.expatoftheyear.nl and cast your vote for the person you think is a great example of—and ambassador for—the international expat community in the Netherlands. Frank Heemskerk, State Secretary for Economic Affairs, will present the Expat Award on 23 March 2010 during a festive ceremony at Nyenrode.

Middle East North African Trade Dinner
Over fifty Dutch ambassadors, ambassadors from the Middle East and North Africa and associated guests gathered for a dinner in Madurodam on Thursday, 21 January at the invitation of Nyenrode and the Netherlands Council for Trade Promotion (NCH). During the dinner, which was opened by State Secretary Frans Heemskerk of Economic Affairs, the attendees exchanged ideas about trade links between the Netherlands and countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Dr. Désirée van Gorp, Director of Nyenrode’s International Department, presented her recent study on the migration of business activities (offshoring) to these countries. The guest of honor was Mustapha Nabli, Senior Advisor on Development Economics at the World Bank and former Minister of Economic Development and of Planning and Regional Development in the Tunisian government. The World Bank and Nyenrode are working closely together in the study of offshoring.

Seminar on Professional Judgment with Robert Knechel and Arnold Wright
On Friday, 19 February, the Research-overleg School of Accountancy & Controlling (RoSAC) will hold a seminar on the theme of 'professional judgment'. Prof. W. Robert Knechel (University of Florida and University of Maastricht) and Prof. Arnold Wright (visiting professor at Nyenrode and professor at the Northeastern University in Boston) will present research papers. Guest lecture Chief Globalization Officer Cisco
On 19 February, 2010, from 9-10 AM, the Nyenrode International Department welcomes Wim Elfrink, Executive Vice President and Chief Globalization Officer of Cisco. As Chief Globalization Officer (CGO), Elfrink is leading the company’s globalization strategy, and as Executive Vice President, Cisco Services, he is responsible for Cisco Services worldwide. In both functions, Elfrink reports directly to CEO John Chambers. He has been with Cisco since 1997.The Cisco globalization strategy represents a shift in business management from a focus on geography to a focus on skill sets and talents. Cisco will continue to have a centralized strategy, but its implementation of this strategy, which is critical to remaining successful in a competitive, global marketplace, will be decentralized. Senior Managers on Study Trip to China
The Europe China Institute has launched a new ‘Executive Management Program China’, which gives senior managers the opportunity to learn more about economic practices in China at both an academic and strategic level. On a trip from 9-18 April 2010, participants will visit four major cities and discuss and experience the political, economic and cultural development of China. In addition to academic lectures, the program includes working visits to top Chinese businesses and in-depth discussions with key stakeholders. The program has been established in cooperation with five top Chinese universities. More information

Start of 21st NCD-Nyenrode Commissarissencyclus
The 21st NCD-Nyenrode Commissarissencyclus, a course for supervisory directors, started on Friday, 15 January. The NCD and Nyenrode have organized the course for the past 15 years. Although the demand for supervisory directors and regulators is rising, partly as a result of political measures to reform supervisory boards, they are facing increased levels of responsibility and accountability. Interest in the NCD-Nyenrode Commissarissencyclus has increased accordingly. You can read more (in Dutch) here.

Workshop Advance Your Business in Changing China
A two-day workshop, ‘Advance Your Business in Changing China’, will begin on 19 March. Dr. Tony Fang, visiting professor at Nyenrode and author of the book ‘Chinese Business Negotiating Style’, will present the workshop, which aims to teach participants how to improve the competitiveness and strategic positioning of businesses in a rapidly changing China. Passing of Henk van Luijk, Pioneer of European Institute for Business Ethics
Prof. Henk van Luijk died on 19 January 2010 at the age of eighty. Henk was one of the pioneers of business ethics in Europe and the 'grand old man' of business ethics in the Netherlands. In 1994, he laid the foundations for Nyenrode's European Institute for Business Ethics, continuing as its academic director until 2000. Number of Family Businesses Much Higher Than Thought
Research by the Nyenrode Center for Entrepreneurship has shown that over two thirds (69%) of Dutch businesses with employees are family firms. That percentage is far higher than was previously assumed. The research report ‘Family business in the Netherlands. Crisis Calls for Different Leader, But Investment Has to Wait
Recent research conducted under the leadership of Prof. Lidewey van der Sluis shows that following the economic crisis organizations are looking for a new type of leader, although they don’t have the budget to develop or recruit such a manager. The researchers of the Nyenrode powerhouse Competing for Talent surveyed 64 major companies on the effect of the crisis in terms of the qualities required of leaders. Center for Entrepreneurship seeks entrepreneurs with dyslexia
Dr. Sharda Nandram of the Nyenrode Center for Entrepreneurship will shortly be starting a study of Entrepreneurship and Dyslexia on behalf of the ‘Woortblind association for people with dyslexia. Foreign research has shown that numerous people with dyslexia start businesses. The central question of the study is “What makes entrepreneurs with dyslexia successful?”The first part of the study will focus on success stories from Dutch entrepreneurs who have dyslexia. To this end, the Center for Entrepreneurship is looking for entrepreneurs who want to share their experiences of dyslexia. If you are an entrepreneur with dyslexia and are willing to tell your story for a study that will be published in book form, please send an email to s.nandram@nyenrode.nl
