NEWSLETTER RESEARCH @ NYENRODE

Dear colleagues!

You are reading the third edition of the Research @ Nyenrode Newsletter, which comes out every spring concerning the preceding calendar year and autumn concerning the preceding academic year. In this Newsletter you can of course find an overview of the Nyenrode publications from 2019, 2020, and 2021 as well as by academic year 2019/2020, 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 (not yet complete of course). As always, if you have not yet informed Chantal de Wit of your recent publications, then please do so right away.

EMAIL YOUR PUBLICATIONS

Even though 2021 was a year dominated by COVID, we did conduct a lot of interesting research, saw the first two editions of the Research @ Nyenrode Newsletter and held two online Research Speed Dating events, and we collected more Impact Cases. We also updated the Faculty Management Charter to include a career path for our Law colleagues, which includes a separate list of 200+ Law journals, all worth 1 point in the Nyenrode Research Output Rating System, which was also updated in July of 2021.

I have once again tried to capture our academic output in an interesting way with all references of the 2021 publications at the end. Thanks to all of you for your research efforts & output, even if you are not mentioned by name in this Newsletter!

Research Director

OVERVIEW

In 2021, we collectively published 27 ABS articles, 10 Eigenfactor articles, and 25 articles in Law journals, for a total of 62 articles. Of these, 16 appeared in top-tier journals (i.e., at least worth 3 points). The goal, per the Research Strategy, is to consistently reach 50 journal articles, of which at least 20 in top-tier journals, so we are close! While earlier reports showed that we consistently met this goal, the table below only includes the ACTUAL published papers in each category, while moving those that are only available online (without a volume & issue number) to 2022/forth and 2021/2022. As such, this Table is a more realistic look at our research output. I also added the total number of Points that we realized with all the publications, which is decreasing slightly over the years, but perhaps 2022 can turn that trend around!

Research output by Calendar Year & Academic Year (September August).

*The 2022/Forth and 2021/2022 are not yet complete but do include all articles that are already published as well as 16 that are so far only published online (i.e., forthcoming).

In the previous two editions, I presented some interesting categories such as publications in the highest ranked journal, most publications, publications with the most (Nyenrode) authors (collaboration!), sole-authored publications, and publications that originated at prestigious conferences. For this newsletter, I decided to do things a little differently, with an interview, followed by a word on Research Speed Dating, the Impact Cases, and (y)our online presence.

INTERVIEW KOEN DERKS

If you are an avid reader of the Newsletter, you have seen Koen Derks name appear several times. Since Koen continuously publishes in top-tier journals (in 2020 Eigenfactor: 4 & ABS: 4, and in 2022 Eigenfactor: 5) with 25+ co-authors (!!), I asked him about this unique experience. Here is the summary of our lively and interesting discussion:

"For the most recent publication, we investigated different types of applications of the Bayes factor, an alternative for the more traditional p-value, in psychological research. Typically, for these larger projects with many co-authors, the leading researchers ask authors in the field whether they are interested in contributing a piece to the article. Since I know some of them from my time at the UvA, where I also learned about the JASP software often used in statistical analyses, I received an email invitation. I was one of the contributors for the Interval Hypotheses application in the paper alongside other contributors, and each application was led by one or two coordinators. In total 30 co-authors are listed on the paper, with the first and the last author as the main contributors, and the other 28 listed in alphabetical order in between. I see these publications as interesting side-projects in addition to my dissertation which focuses on applications of Bayesian statistics in Auditing. For my dissertation I have two published articles (one in an ABS: 2 journal) and another two under review at ABS: 3 journals. I hope to defend my dissertation later this calendar year!"

A WORD ON...

the second round of Research Speed Dating. We held it December 15th, 2021, in Teams (mostly) with 30 minutes for each of three rounds. The randomized pairs (see below) worked great, and all participants were delighted to meet, chat, discuss research, and exchange cross-disciplinary ideas. To give you an idea about what we discussed, here are the questions that I suggested (but of course, our faculty being our faculty, they deviated from this):

  • Background information (PhD in what, current position, how long at Nyenrode)
  • Research topic & methodology preferences
  • Question 1: What is the most far-out research methodology that you have used?
  • Question 2: If you had 3 weeks of free time, which research project would you work on?
  • Question 3: Which colleague have you always wanted to collaborate with?
  • Question 4: What exotic research topic do you want to know more about?

*They met in-person as they were both at Nyenrode also the reason why Jobs screen is empty in the first picture.

In the closing comments everyone mentioned how they enjoyed this and are looking forward to a new edition in 2022, so I will be organizing this soon!

THE IMPACT CASES

We recently published the first 26 Impact Cases from 2020 and 2021 in a booklet, which is available in my office (AH 3.57). This booklet was lauded by the recent EQUIS visitation committee in their write-up, and has received praise from different parties, both internal (e.g., EEOD) and external (e.g., the American alumni who Koen and I visited in March/April 2022). Since the printing of this booklet, more have either already gone live in 2022 (Jack van der Veens in February, Rob Blommes in March, Tineke Lambooy & Aikaterini Argyrous in April) or are scheduled (Bob Hoogenbooms in May, Yulia Levashovas in June, and Annemieke Roobeek, Jacques de Swart, & Myrthe van der Plas in July).

VISIT THE IMPACT CASES

Our communications department is doing a stellar job highlighting one every week! If you are interested in adding your Impact Case to the mix, please let me know and we will find a month for yours. Once we have collected an additional 20 by late 2023, the booklet will be updated, and additional videos & podcasts will be recorded.

(Y)OUR ONLINE PRESENCE

You might recall an email by yours truly in March 2020, a week or so after the first lockdown went into effect. It started with Now that we are all getting used to the new reality if we only knew then what we know now! Anyway, in this email I asked you to update your online presence, and I repeat a similar request here. Please make sure that your Google Scholar account is up to date (and that you list Nyenrode Business University as your affiliation with your Nyenrode email address some of you do NOT show up in the Nyenrode group), as well as your ResearchGate, ORCID, and Publons accounts.

Finally take a look at your bio page does it include the latest information? If not, please contact Annefleur de Jong - Middelkoop.

UPDATE YOUR BIO PAGE

62 PUBLICATIONS

In closing, you can find ALL 62 publications by Nyenrode faculty in 2021, with the Nyenrode faculty members highlighted. Go ahead and search for yours and if I missed something, please let me know.

REFERENCES

Thank you all very much for your continued contributions to our research culture and output, and I am looking forward to seeing you all at the Nyenrode estates.
