Students

When coming to The Netherlands for study, you might need a visa. Through the below information we will help you on your way.

  • EU/EER nationals:

EU nationals do not need a visa to study or work in The Netherlands.

  • Non-EU nationals:

As a Non-EU national, you will most likely be required to apply for a visa to enter the Netherlands for study or work purposes. However, as your purpose of stay is to study in the Netherlands, your visa will need to be applied for by the university and not you as a student. As a student you are responsible for the application fee of a study visa.

Important: Please be aware that the Dutch Immigration services (IND) require you to attain at least half of your study points (ECTS) per academic year. Students starting in September will be required to have attained at least 30 ECTS at the end of the academic year. Students starting in January will be required to have attained 15 ECTS. Nyenrode will check this at the end of every study year and inform the IND of your study progress. If your progress does not meet the mentioned threshold, the IND can withdraw your residence permit.

Furthermore, you are obliged to inform the IND within one month after quitting or completing your program that you are no longer studying at Nyenrode.

If you are a student who is currently enrolled at a university in the Netherlands:

  • EU/EER nationals: EU nationals do not need a visa to study or work in The Netherlands.
  • Non-EU nationals:

    •  Internship

If you are in the possession of a student visa, you are required to have an internship agreement. This agreement needs to be co-signed by the company you will be completing the internship at, as well as your educational institution. No extra permit or visa is required.

    •  Working

Your employer will have to apply for a work permit for you. You are not allowed to work without it. Furthermore, you are limited to work a maximum of 16 hours per week during the year, or full-time during the vacation months from June to August.

Please note: Regardless of your nationality, if you plan to do an internship or/and a (part-time) job, you need to take out Dutch health insurance. Please check the detailed information here.

The Orientation Year Visa for Graduates

  • EU/EER nationals:

  • Non-EU nationals:

As a Non-EU graduate you can apply for an Orientation Year Visa which allows you one year to start your own business in the Netherlands or offer you time to find employment within the Netherlands.  For more information on this opportunity, please refer to the IND website.  Usually, the visa application procesprocess takes  between three and six months.
