ESG–program Brainport
Technology-driven companies in the Brainport region are invited to participate in a practical learning and research program focused on ESG, digitalization, and long-term business transformation. Designed for companies with 50 to 2,000 FTEs, the program helps multidisciplinary teams turn a specific strategic challenge into a validated, board-ready transformation roadmap.
By combining academic insights, data-driven methods, peer learning, and expert coaching, the program enables companies to move beyond ESG compliance and isolated digital initiatives. Participants explore how ESG and digitalization can be integrated into their business strategy to strengthen competitiveness, support innovation, and create long-term value.
From compliance challenge to strategic opportunity
ESG and digitalization are rapidly changing the conditions for growth, financing, supply chain participation, and talent attraction. For technology-driven companies, sustainability is no longer merely a reporting requirement or compliance issue. It is becoming a strategic capability that directly affects competitiveness, innovation, and long-term value creation.
Companies in the Brainport ecosystem operate in a market shaped by geopolitical uncertainty, emerging technologies, changing capital markets, and growing European ESG regulations, including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).
At the same time, companies are increasingly transferring ESG data requirements to their suppliers. As a result, technology-driven companies depend more heavily on their business partners and suppliers to measure, manage, and report on the environmental, social, and governance impact of their operations and wider value chain.
These developments affect products and services, business models, collaboration within supply chains, and governance and decision-making processes. They therefore influence how companies create value in both the short and long term.
This leads to a central strategic leadership question:
How can companies integrate ESG and digitalization into their business strategy to create long-term value and strengthen their future competitiveness?
Connecting ESG and digital transformation
The main question addresses two related challenges. First, it explores the business opportunities that arise when companies connect ESG objectives with digitalization. Second, it examines the organizational capabilities required to implement an integrated ESG and digital business strategy.
ESG reporting is becoming increasingly data-driven. Companies need reliable ESG data from their own operations as well as from business partners, suppliers, and customers. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, the Internet of Things, automation, digital platforms, and digital twins can help companies collect, analyze, and use this data.
The challenge, however, is broader than technology or regulation alone. ESG and digitalization also affect strategy, leadership, governance, business models, products, services, operational processes, and ecosystem collaboration. Companies therefore need to understand how these developments will transform their business and contribute to long-term value creation.
Turning a strategic dilemma into a transformation roadmap
Nyenrode Business University, Brainport Partners, and Solmirai are developing a practical learning and research program to help companies address this challenge.
At the start of the program, each participating company introduces a specific strategic dilemma related to ESG, digitalization, data, governance, technology, or business model transformation. Throughout the program, the company team develops this dilemma into a validated, board-ready transformation roadmap, supported by academic insights, data-driven methods, peer learning, and expert coaching.
The resulting roadmap connects:
- the business rationale;
- ESG impact;
- digital enablement;
- financial implications;
- governance requirements;
- stakeholder dependencies;
- implementation logic.
It is designed to support further decision-making and implementation within the participating company.
What participating companies gain
The program offers companies a structured environment in which to address an ESG and digital transformation challenge that is directly relevant to their business. It helps them move beyond ESG compliance, reporting, and isolated digital initiatives toward an integrated strategy for business transformation and long-term value creation.
Each company develops a concrete output package consisting of:
- a clearly defined ESG and digital impact challenge;
- an impact measurement protocol;
- relevant impact KPIs;
- a data-driven analysis;
- a validated solution direction;
- a board-ready transformation roadmap.
Participation also strengthens internal alignment. By working in a multidisciplinary team, companies develop a shared language across strategy, finance, operations, ESG, data, and technology.
Who the program is for
The program is designed for technology-driven companies in the Brainport region and organizations that play a role in related ecosystems. It is particularly relevant to companies active in:
- high-tech systems;
- semiconductors;
- medical technology;
- advanced manufacturing;
- agritech;
- industrial services;
- digital technology.
The primary target group consists of companies with 50 to 2,000 FTEs.
Each company ideally participates with a multidisciplinary team of up to four people, combining senior leadership with relevant subject-matter expertise. Team members may include C-suite executives, strategy or transformation leaders, ESG specialists, sustainability managers, digital innovation experts, data professionals, finance specialists, and operations managers.
Each cohort consists of a maximum of 20 participants, forming approximately five action-learning and research teams.
