Following an intensive preparation period, the restoration of the quay wall at Nijenrode Castle that collapsed in 2023 is now officially underway. This major restoration project will carefully reconstruct and preserve an important part of the historic heritage of the Nijenrode estate for future generations.
In recent months, extensive technical investigations, surveys, tender preparations, and the acquisition of the necessary permits and grants have been carried out. The first activities are now visible on site. Water has been pumped out of part of the moat to facilitate the restoration work, and the construction site will be further prepared and equipped over the coming weeks.
To ensure safety throughout the project, the remaining intact sections of the quay wall will be supported with temporary bracing. The walls will then be excavated to allow the restoration work to be carried out with the utmost care.
Focus on Heritage and Archaeology
An archaeologist will be present during the excavation works. This ensures that any archaeological discoveries can be immediately examined, documented, and preserved. In this way, the project contributes not only to the restoration of the quay wall but also to the protection of potentially hidden historical heritage.
Once the preparatory work has been completed, construction of the new structure will begin. Foundation piles will first be installed, followed by a concrete base slab that will provide a solid foundation for the new quay wall. The wall will then be rebuilt using bricks carefully selected to match the original wall in colour, size, and appearance.
Authentic Bricks
Special bricks are being produced for this restoration by an authentic brickworks. This is the only brick manufacturer in the Netherlands that still operates a traditional ring kiln. Thanks to this artisanal production process, the new bricks will closely reflect the historic character of the original quay wall and the listed castle.

Their support ensures that this unique heritage project can be carried out and that an important element of the historic castle complex will be preserved for generations to come.
