During a festive gathering, the Province of Utrecht officially announced which fifteen projects will receive funding from the Fonds Erfgoedparels (Heritage Gems Fund). One of the selected projects is the restoration of the quay walls of Nijenrode Castle in Breukelen.

The contribution is intended for phase 2 of the Quay Wall project, focusing on the restoration of the eastern section of the quay walls. Nyenrode Business University is highly grateful to the province for this important financial support.

Phased Approach

The restoration of the quay walls covers both the southern and eastern sections of the forecourt. Phase 1, focusing on the southern and western sections, will start this summer. Phase 2, for which the provincial contribution has been awarded, will follow thereafter. Guido Vlug, Manager Estate & Heritage at Nyenrode Business University: “The quay walls are an essential part of the historic character of Nijenrode. Thanks to the contribution from the Province of Utrecht, we are able to carefully restore this special heritage and preserve it for future generations. It is encouraging to see such strong appreciation and support for the preservation of iconic monuments like this.”

Connecting History and Academia

Since 1946, Nijenrode Castle has been the home of Nyenrode Business University. What began as a training institute for future leaders has grown into a leading university, where entrepreneurship, sustainability, and social responsibility are central. The restoration work forms part of a multi-year programme aimed at future-proofing the estate, including its historic buildings and installations.

Importance of Heritage Preservation

Through the Heritage Gems scheme, the Province of Utrecht supports owners of listed monuments in preserving valuable cultural heritage. During the gathering, special attention was given to the dedication of owners, volunteers, and stakeholders who work daily to safeguard these unique places. Thanks to the contribution from the Heritage Gems Fund, phase 2 of the Quay Wall project can now be realised, ensuring that this characteristic element of Nijenrode Castle is preserved for future generations.
