Biography

Prof. Dr. Stefan Thewissen is Professor of Inclusive and Sustainable Wellbeing and Pensions. He is affiliated with the Center for Corporate Reporting, Finance & Tax. His research and teaching explore how organizations can combine financial returns with environmental stewardship, social cohesion, and inclusion, particularly in the pension sector.

Thewissen is an expert in social security, inequality, sustainability, and policy preferences. His publications cover a broad range of topics, including limitations of GDP as a measure of wellbeing, as well as economic effects of labor market policies and societal transitions, such as digitalization, globalization, and the shift to a low-carbon economy. At Nyenrode, Thewissen contributes to executive and master's programs, focusing on responsible investment and inclusive and sustainable value creation in the pension sector.

Thewissen has built a career at the intersection of academic research and public policy. He obtained his PhD from Leiden University and has held positions at the University of Oxford, the OECD in Paris, the World Bank in Washington DC, and the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB). He has also been a visiting researcher at Harvard University. He currently serves as external advisor to the Investment Committee of the Pension Fund for the Dutch Healthcare Sector (PFZW).

Outside of work, Thewissen enjoys bouldering, running, and cooking.
