Biography
Be curious, and do not judge
Ton Meershoek MSc RA RC is a lecturer at the Center for Corporate Reporting, Finance & Tax. Since 1992, he has been teaching financial reporting in the master’s and post-master’s programs of the Accountancy program. Meershoek delivers both regular lectures and exam preparation sessions.
“The nice thing about exam preparation sessions is that most students realize they really have to put in the work to pass the exam, and the groups are smaller.”
Meershoek gains great energy from seeing students develop during the course series and from achieving high pass rates and strong student evaluations. He is a member of two groups responsible for developing and grading written examinations and for creating educational materials for both the bachelor’s and post-master’s phases.
In 1980, Meershoek began his training as an Adjunct Accountant First Class with the Dutch Government Audit Service (Rijksaccountantsdienst), alongside the NIvRA program to become a Chartered Accountant (RA). After completing three years of full-time training at the Dutch Tax Administration, he worked there as an Adjunct Accountant First Class until early 1989. After obtaining his accounting qualification in 1990, he worked for two years as an operational auditor at the internal audit department of AkzoNobel, followed by more than six years as site controller/accounting manager at the Catalyst business unit. He then served for nearly five years as Finance Director at a corporate identity agency.
On April 1, 2005, Meershoek decided to follow his passion and joined the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) as a senior supervisor in the field of financial reporting. Since 2014, he has held the role of Specialist in Corporate Reporting.
At Nyenrode, Meershoek aims to inspire students to master the field of financial reporting and to become robust, well-rounded accountants. In his view, it is essential to encourage students to think critically while supporting them where needed.
International activities
Meershoek’s international activities through the AFM are not research-focused but are nonetheless highly relevant to his teaching. At the European level, he represents the AFM within the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), where since 2011 he has chaired one of the permanent working groups in the field of financial or sustainability reporting. Since early 2023, he has chaired the Sustainability Reporting Working Group.
At the global level, he represents the AFM within the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). Through IOSCO, he has been an observer at the meetings of the IFRS Interpretations Committee in London since 2014. As of January 1, 2026, he has been appointed as a member of the IFRS Advisory Council.
Other interests
Several weeks each year, Meershoek and his wife stay in their bungalow on Gran Canaria, where they enjoy the sun, the warm climate, and good food. He enjoys walking along the beach and attending home matches of the local football club.
In the Netherlands, he likes to attend home matches of Feyenoord and regularly visits the Stadstheater in Zoetermeer.
