What should you expect from an MBA in the Netherlands?

Artificial intelligence, geopolitical tensions and changing expectations of business are reshaping the environment in which leaders operate. If the challenges facing organizations are changing, what should an MBA prepare future leaders for?

That question was at the heart of a recent MBA Leaders Roundtable organized by MBAGRADSCHOOLS. Berber van Norden, Director of Management Degree Programs at Nyenrode Business University, joined MBA directors from four other Dutch business schools to discuss what distinguishes MBA education in the Netherlands and what professionals should expect from an MBA today.

Their conversation touched on personal development, peer learning, the connection between academia and business, and the skills leaders need to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Preparing for what comes next

An MBA traditionally provides a broad foundation in areas such as strategy, finance, marketing and management. But knowing how organizations function is only part of the challenge facing today's leaders. During the roundtable, Van Norden emphasized the importance of preparing participants for developments that cannot always be predicted:

“With the current challenges that we have ahead of us – geopolitical tensions, AI – the students need to be prepared for whatever the world throws at us next.”

Rather than having an answer ready for every situation, leaders increasingly need to understand different perspectives, connect knowledge from different disciplines and decide how to act when circumstances change. This also changes the role of management education. Frameworks and business knowledge remain important, but participants need opportunities to apply them, question them and determine which approach fits a particular situation.

Van Norden described this combination during the discussion as a “hearts, heads, and hands” approach: learning that brings together knowledge, personal development and the ability to put ideas into practice.

Developing the person behind the professional

Another recurring theme during the roundtable was that an MBA journey is not solely about developing business knowledge. It also creates an opportunity to reflect on where you are in your career, how you lead and where you want to go next. For Van Norden, this development can result in something particularly valuable: confidence.

“I always do find that an MBA gives confidence at the end of the journey. If it’s academically or personally, because you know what you’ve grown towards, you know what you want your destination to be, and you know that you have the right tools at hand.”

That combination of professional and personal development is particularly relevant at moments when professionals are considering their next step. An MBA can provide new knowledge and perspectives, while also creating the space to examine ambitions, strengths and the kind of leader someone wants to become.

Learning with and from others

The people in an MBA classroom are also an important part of the learning experience. Participants bring experience from different organizations, industries, functions and cultures. A strategic challenge that looks familiar to someone working in finance might be approached very differently by someone with a background in technology, healthcare or entrepreneurship.

The roundtable participants therefore described an MBA cohort as an ecosystem in which students do not simply consume education but help create the learning experience themselves. This diversity of perspectives is particularly relevant in the Netherlands.  As a small and internationally connected country, the Netherlands has long depended on trade, collaboration and the ability to work across borders.

During the discussion, Van Norden pointed to this history of international exchange and multiculturalism as part of the country's entrepreneurial character. For MBA participants, learning in such an environment offers an opportunity to challenge familiar assumptions and develop the ability to work with people who see a problem differently.

More than preparing for the next job

Ultimately, the discussion raised a broader question about the value of an MBA. Career progression remains an important motivation for many participants. Yet preparing for a new role is different from preparing for a career in which roles, technologies and business challenges will continue to evolve.

The ability to navigate uncertainty, learn from others, combine different perspectives and translate knowledge into action can therefore remain valuable long after graduation. An MBA cannot predict what the world will throw at its participants next. It can, however, help them become better prepared to respond.
