"Leadership in these times sometimes feels like assembling IKEA furniture without instructions while blindfolded." With this vivid metaphor, Rector Magnificus Barbara Majoor illustrated the challenges facing today's leaders. During the opening of the academic year, we examined what this means for leaders and for the institution itself.
Critical role for innovation and entrepreneurship
University Board Chairwoman Micky Adriaansens emphasized that during times of geopolitical unrest, choosing the right course demands more from us than ever before. She argued that strengthening the European market, building new relationships, and stimulating innovation are essential to securing prosperity and peace. History shows that protectionism and building walls never work out well, while openness and entrepreneurship do point the way forward.
"It's entrepreneurs who come up with the smart technologies and business models that pull us out of chaos. That's our ticket to success. At Nyenrode, we contribute by training entrepreneurial leaders. Because in a world where checks and balances are under pressure, leadership is more important than ever."
Shifting power blocs require moral leadership
Dr. Jelle van Baardewijk, associate professor at Nyenrode, addressed the role of leadership and ethics in his keynote speech about a world where certainties are shaking and power blocs are shifting.
He outlined how the US under Trump, and more broadly under American policy of recent decades, increasingly uses the global economy as a geopolitical weapon. For Europe, this means we must not be guided solely by dependency or fear, but must have the courage to defend our own interests and values.
Moral leadership plays a key role here: not just reacting to power, but holding onto our own compass. Whether it involves technology, trade, or diplomacy, it requires leaders to show steadfastness, vision, and the ability to make ethical choices in a turbulent world.
A compass for responsible entrepreneurship
Rector Magnificus Barbara Majoor reflected on the role of the institution in an increasingly complex world. In a time when old certainties are disappearing, it's not enough to be a spectator. "It's crucial that we as a business university don't just adapt to the new reality, but actively provide direction and contribute to the dialogue between businesses, politics, and society."
According to Majoor, our responsibility also lies in training leaders who bring not only knowledge and skills, but also a moral compass. "Leaders who dare to make choices in uncertain times. Leaders who build bridges between profit and values, between strategy and ethics, and between the local and global."
This way, the institution aims to be not just an academic institution, but a guide for responsible entrepreneurship and leadership. "Together with students, alumni, and partners, we're building a future where companies are not only successful, but also meaningful."
