From Nyenrode project to impactful healthcare platform: Wellcom Health eases the burden on care providers

What began as an idea during the Entrepreneurship Course in Nyenrode’s MSc in Management has grown into a fast-rising company making a real difference in the healthcare sector. The founders of Wellcom Health, alumni Victor van der Kooij and Fabian Pusceddu, identified both a societal challenge and an opportunity to apply technology in a meaningful way. We want to reduce the administrative burden in healthcare and improve access to medical communication,” says Victor.

Over ten intensive weeks, their concept took shape: a secure, digital speech recognition solution designed to enhance communication between healthcare providers and patients. “Thanks to weekly pitches in a Dragons’ Den-style setting, with sharp feedback from faculty and entrepreneurs like Ger Zwartendijk, Ard Jol, and Sebastiaan Hooft, the idea was refined into a clear and compelling proposition. It was a truly unique learning experience,” Victor reflects.

From idea to impact

Wellcom Health started as a simple translation tool but has since evolved into a fully-fledged healthcare platform. We support the entire consultation process, from start to finish,” Fabian explains. “Our software listens in, summarizes conversations between caregiver and patient, and translates where needed for non-native speakers. This can save healthcare professionals hours each week. More importantly, it allows them to truly focus on the patient again, as manual documentation is significantly reduced.”

While Fabian and Victor laid the conceptual foundation, they lacked the technical expertise to bring it to life. That’s when I reached out to Thijs Rood, a fellow medical student who had also studied AI,” Fabian shares. “We didn’t know each other well at the time, but Thijs was immediately enthusiastic. He has an entrepreneurial mindset, which instantly created a connection.”

Purpose-driven entrepreneurship

Wellcom Health is a textbook example of purpose-driven entrepreneurship. "At Nyenrode, you don’t just learn how to build a business,” says Fabian, “you also explore why you’re doing it." That 'why' is crystal clear for the founders: “We want to contribute to future-proof healthcare by relieving professionals of administrative tasks, so they can spend more time delivering real care.” Today, a team of six developers is continuously working to improve the solution. The connection with Nyenrode remains strong, with the founders regularly returning to give guest lectures during Healthcare Management and Innovation masterclasses.

Ambitions for the future

Wellcom Health has big ambitions: to become a market leader in intelligent, tailor-made solutions that seamlessly integrate technology into the healthcare process. “The seed was planted at Nyenrode,” says Fabian, “but creating sustainable healthcare solutions is a long journey. We’re building a digital assistant that supports professionals in every aspect of their work. We can’t do that alone — strong collaboration, including with Nyenrode, is essential.”
