This month marks the start of the restoration of the monumental Bell Tower of Nijenrode Castle. This project is the first step in a broader, future-oriented approach to preserving the 13th-century castle, which has been closely tied to Nyenrode Business University for 79 years. Thanks to a grant from the Utrecht Province’s Fonds Erfgoedparels (Heritage Gems Fund) and contributions from the Kasteelvrienden, the restoration can now begin.

The Bell Tower is an iconic part of the castle and a recognizable landmark in the Vecht region. Originally built as a gate tower, it was fitted with its characteristic carillon in the twentieth century—one of the few to be found on a castle in the Netherlands. To this day, the instrument is played during academic ceremonies and special occasions at Nyenrode.
After decades of exposure to the elements, restoration is urgently needed. The roof shows signs of wear, cracks have appeared in the lead cladding of the spire, and the presence of white lead could eventually cause severe leaks. In addition to the tower, restoration work on the foundation and quay wall is also planned.
A future for heritage
The restoration of the Bell Tower is part of a larger effort. In 2025, Nijenrode Castle celebrates its 750th anniversary. Of the 27 national monuments on the estate, 24 have already been restored. With the tower as the next step, Nyenrode continues to invest in heritage preservation as well as in a sustainable vision for long-term management and maintenance.
Connecting history and academia
Since 1946, Nijenrode Castle has been home to Nyenrode Business University. What began as a training institute for future leaders has grown into a leading university where entrepreneurship, sustainability, and social responsibility are central values.
Micky Adriaansens, Chair of the University Board, emphasizes the importance of this restoration: “Nijenrode Castle is the flagship of our university and one of the most defining landmarks in the Vecht region. With this restoration, we are ensuring that both current and future generations can continue to enjoy this unique heritage.”
