Module Business Value of Data and Technology information session

Start date: 10 Jul
Type: Online Session
Location: Online

During the online information session on Thursday, July 10 at 12:30 PM, core faculty member Gerard Wijers will provide a glimpse into the module Business Value of Data and Technology. This is a great opportunity to explore whether the challenges you are working on align with the focus of this module. This module is taught in English.

Business Ethics in context

Introduction

What pays, what is allowed and what is right? Companies operate on the market, they are bound by laws and the state, and are expected to act ethically. Seemingly straightforward, this situation is actually full of paradoxes and dilemmas; what is profitable is not always ethical and what is morally right is not necessarily legal. Our module Business Ethics in context helps you recognize and explore the interfaces between these three fields (Market, Law/Government and Ethics), allowing you to better understand the social role and responsibilities of your organization.

What will you get out of it?

  • Knowledge on the fundamental ideas of theoretical ethics: virtue ethics, deontology, consequentialism, evolutionary ethics.
  • Knowledge on the insights from applied business ethics: a) ethics of internet, b) ethics of AI, c) ethics of management, d) ethics of hrm, e) ethics of marketing.
  • Familiarity with the history of the state-market-nexus from France in the 18th century up until ‘trumpenomics’.
  • A final essay and assessment showing how you have applied what you have learned to your own business case.

What our participants say

""The MBA helped me with a real-life case at work""

Dahrin Tenic CIO at Prodicom

“This part of my MBA has absolutely broadened my academicals knowledge and more importantly it helped me with a real-life case at work. Better understanding the sheer zones between market, law and business ethics helped me create a successful new business proposition for our customers”

Curriculum

What are you going to do?

Business-society relationships are multidimensional and often complex. They involve multiple stakeholders and multiple perspectives. In the module we will develop and practice a method of approaching such complex issues by looking at them from three perspectives:
  • Market (is it profitable?)
  • Law/ Government (is it allowed?)
  • Ethics (is it the good thing to do?)
Business problems don't come neatly rubberstamped as 'marketing'-problems or 'ethical'-issues. It is part of the manager's competence to figure out what type of problem (s)he is dealing with in the first place. Complex problems are multi-faceted and multi-layered. How to scrutinize the legal aspects of a problem? How to be sensitive to the business opportunities of ethical and social problems?

Overall the special ‘take away’ of this module is the integrative approach. The module aims at helping managers to become broad-minded and to approach business problems in a multi-disciplinary way. We roughly discern three perspectives:

  • Micro: your leadership and moral capacity
  • Meso: the situation in a certain company within a certain sector
  • Macro: worldwide developments

There are three blocks of two days:

  • Block 1: ethics of the internet + introduction to law + key insights & ethics of marketing
  • Block 2: theory of ethics + ethics of management and hrm + history of state-market-nexus
  • Block 3: theory of ethics + ICT-law + insight in major ethical dilemma’s of Shell
