Biography

Whoever asserts a value, must bring its influence to bear. Whoever maintains that it has value regardless of the influence brought to bear by any individual human being who endorses it, is simply cheating

Dr. Bart Jansen LL.M. is Associate Professor of Legal Philosophy at Nyenrode Business University and since 2023 affiliated with the New York University (NYU) Philosophy Department. His book The Juridification of Business Ethics was published in September 2023 by Springer International. At Nyenrode, Bart Jansen is part of the Nyenrode Faculty Expertise Center Entrepreneurship, Governance & Stewardship and is a member of the Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute.

In addition to his work at Nyenrode, Jansen teaches General Jurisprudence at the University of Amsterdam, where he currently lectures on Law and Human Behaviour. Since the spring of 2022, he has served as Adjunct Professor of Legal Philosophy at Airlangga University in Surabaya, Indonesia, where he also conducts comparative legal research on Indonesia and the Netherlands. In 2023, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Faculty of Law of the University of Curaçao; in 2025, he taught Legal Philosophy at Leiden University; and since 2025, he has been Visiting Professor of Corporate Governance at Anton de Kom University of Suriname.

Jansen’s research and publications focus primarily on legal philosophy and ethics. In addition, he publishes on aesthetics and philosophy of art, the semiotics of law, existential philosophy, medical ethics and health law, sustainability in global supply chains and the arts sector, comparative constitutional law, business ethics and management philosophy, as well as legal history.

In January 2022, Bart Jansen obtained his PhD from Nyenrode Business University. In his dissertation, he advanced the argument that business ethics is increasingly subject to juridification, and that this process obstructs the functioning of a genuinely ethical discourse.
