Overall, high-income nations are all overshooting planetary boundaries. This situation is the result of an economic architecture centered on the overarching objective of constantly making more money, whether it is income, profits, or GDP. In these economic systems, economic growth is seen as a central economic and political goal.
New utopias emerge that challenge these traditional economic principles and propose alternative frameworks focusing on social and environmental aspects of our society. One of the utopias focuses on a society with limited growth called “degrowth”. Degrowth is the planned and democratic reduction of production and consumption in rich countries to reduce environmental pressures and inequalities while improving wellbeing.
While a transition to degrowth has been studied thoroughly as a political and societal phenomenon, the essence of degrowth in business and management is unknown, i.e., how degrowth can be operationalized in organizations and especially by the dominant modern for-profit businesses. Thus, degrowth also requires a new understanding of how organizations operate under a new economic system and a new definition of what degrowth means in business is needed.
We are interested in candidates with a clear academic research ambition and a background in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Candidates must have the ambition to publish in highly ranked international peer reviewed academic journals, and to develop a high-quality and original research portfolio that is relevant to academia and the business community.
