Internal control and accounting information systems are being rewritten by AI, automation, and the digitalization of business processes. Continuous monitoring, AI-enabled controls, the assurance of algorithm-driven decisions, and data governance are reshaping what auditors, controllers, and boards do. We are looking for an academic who wants to be in the middle of that shift, in a school where the line between research, education, and practice is unusually short.

Nyenrode is the Netherlands' private business university and one of the few European schools that combines a serious research agenda in accounting and control with a direct line into the Dutch boardroom and the post-master CPA (RA) and EMFC (RC) pipeline. Business Transformation and Technology, with a clear focus on AI and digitalization, is one of our signature themes, and this position contributes directly to it. We are Triple Crown-accredited (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA), B-Corp-certified, and well-ranked among European business schools.

This is a chance to build a research and teaching agenda that matters academically and shows up in practice within months, not decades.

About the position

The position focuses on research and education in Internal Control and Accounting Information Systems within Bestuurlijke Informatievoorziening (BIV). We recruit at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor levels. The emphasis across all ranks is on the internal control aspects of auditing and controlling, including the integration of AI, data, and digital transformation in audit and control practice. Candidates contribute to research, education, and societal impact at a level appropriate to the appointment.

We particularly welcome candidates with the ambition to strengthen, connect, and inspire the current group of auditing and assurance researchers, and to bridge into Nyenrode's broader work on AI, data, and digital transformation.

Scope by academic rank

  • Assistant and Associate Professors focus on internal controls, accounting information systems, IT auditing, AI-enabled controls, continuous monitoring, algorithmic accountability, and data-related governance challenges within the Dutch BIV domain. These positions contribute to the core curriculum of auditor and controller education and build a strong individual research profile.

  • The Full Professor position has an overarching, strategic focus on Internal Controls and Accounting Information Systems within BIV, including the integration of AI, data, and digital transformation into audit and control practice. The role carries leadership responsibility for research programming, educational coherence, and the field's external positioning in academia and professional practice.

What will you do?

Depending on rank, the successful candidate is expected to:

  • Develop and sustain a coherent and impactful line of research and teaching in Internal Controls and Accounting Information Systems, contributing to Nyenrode's signature theme on Business Transformation and Technology (AI and digitalization).

  • Translate scientific research into high-quality and innovative education.

  • Contribute actively to academic, public, and professional debates in the field.

  • Take responsibility for educational activities in Auditing, Assurance, and Control with a strong BIV perspective, including teaching in bachelor, master, and postgraduate programmes.

  • Supervise bachelor, master, and (where applicable) doctoral students.

  • Contribute to academic leadership, collegial collaboration, and (depending on rank) managerial tasks within the department.

Research domain

Internal controls and accounting information systems are being reshaped by AI, automation, and digitalization. Continuous monitoring, AI-enabled controls, algorithmic accountability, and the assurance of digital and AI-driven business processes raise new research questions about control design, audit quality, organizational governance, risk management, and sustainable value creation. This position sits at that intersection and contributes to Nyenrode's signature theme of Business Transformation and Technology.

Profile

We are looking for a creative and inspiring researcher with strong academic credibility, leadership qualities, and a clear vision on current scientific challenges in the domain, including those raised by AI and digital transformation.

Requirements vary by rank, but broadly include:

  • A PhD in Auditing, Accounting, Information Systems, or a closely related field, or near completion.

  • A demonstrable track record of high-quality scientific publications, commensurate with the level of appointment.

  • A clear ambition and trajectory toward publishing in internationally highly recognized, peer-reviewed journals of the field (such as ABS 3/4/4*, FT50, and equivalent leading outlets), appropriate to rank.

  • Proven capability or clearly demonstrated potential to develop and deliver innovative, high-quality education.

  • Demonstrated capability (or potential) to supervise students at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.

  • A strong scientific and professional network, enabling effective bridging between theory and practice.

  • Excellent didactic skills and affinity with bachelor’s and (post-) master's education.

  • Good management and communication skills, and a collaborative mindset.

  • Excellent command of English (spoken and written); proficiency in Dutch is desirable.

  • A post-master qualification in auditing or controlling is an advantage, not a strict requirement.

What we offer

  • An appointment in line with Dutch academic norms, with a competitive package appropriate to rank and experience.

  • A clear research time allocation as part of the standard academic workload, with internal funding to support data collection, conferences, and external engagement.

  • Access to a unique practitioner ecosystem: the Dutch RA and RC post-master pipeline, Big Four and corporate partners, and an active boardroom and executive education network.

  • A working environment on the Breukelen castle estate, with additional teaching locations in Amsterdam and The Hague.

  • Professional development opportunities, including mentoring and a structured promotion track.
