Employee loyalty in the traditional sense is losing ground. Organizational commitment, based on social exchange, is not strong enough to create attachment within work relationships in today’s changing nature of work. This is one of the conclusions by Dr. Ali Fenwick’s dissertation titled ‘Creating a Committed Workforce: Using Social Exchange and Social Identity to Enhance Psychological Attachment within an Ever-changing Workplace’, for which he received his doctorate from Nyenrode Business Universiteit on December 12, 2018.

“The field of Auditing & Assurance is about people and trust”, says Prof. Dr. Joost van Buuren. However, according to Van Buuren, the field has not been innovative enough in recent years and is failing to adequately fulfill users’ wishes. Van Buuren therefore calls upon the sector to develop a new active approach: one in which innovation is aimed at meeting users’ needs and boosting their trust in the accountant through scientific validation of audit methodology. Van Buuren: “Accountants must start thinking differently and seize opportunities with an open mind in order to increase the relevance of the accounting position.”

Breukelen, October 3 2018 - An ecosystem perspective on innovation in the tourism sector is needed. This approach places a much greater focus on the various stakeholders in the innovation, which in turn provides a clearer picture of the long-term success and added value for the customer. That is the message shared by Prof. Dr. Bas Hillebrand in his speech. He claims that tourism is uniquely suited for this due to the many (digital) innovations within the sector, and calls upon the industry to conduct joint research into this perspective. Hillebrand also argues that we can use the results of this research to better understand the extent of businesses’ innovativeness, the acceptance of innovations, the necessary skills and the overall customer experience.

Now that the modern business world is becoming increasingly complex for sales representatives and sales managers, it's time for a new strategy. With consolidated customer data and a successful CI (Customer Intelligence) strategy, sales representatives can establish a closer connection with the customer in order to increase sales revenue. CI has quickly risen to prominence, and sales departments should adapt accordingly. This is one of the conclusions reached by Konstantinos Rigopoulos in his dissertation titled "Customer Intelligence and its Effect on Buyer-Seller Relationships in Business Markets", for which he will receive his doctorate from Nyenrode Business Universiteit on September 17 2018.

Prof. Ruud Wetzels has been appointed as a professor at Nyenrode Business Universiteit as of 1 July to hold the chair in Data Science. In this chair, Wetzels will be conducting research focused on applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), mathematics and statistics in the business world.

The turmoil surrounding the economic situation in Italy has returned in recent weeks. Based on inflation expectations, however, Italian consumers intend to remain in the eurozone. Inflation expectations would indeed rise if the country were to leave the eurozone, though the findings show that inflation expectations actually fall during times of concern over the eurozone’s future. This points to an internal adjustment mechanism within the eurozone. This is one of the conclusions reached by Beau Soederhuizen in his dissertation titled “Empirical studies on (un)conventional policies and macroeconomic adjustment during the crisis”, for which he will receive his doctorate from Nyenrode Business Universiteit on 11 June 2018. At age 26, Soederhuizen is the youngest person ever to earn a PhD from the university.
